What members and friends think

Algeria (Nassima Oulebsir, 2008): Thank you and Thank you. I am very happy for the reward and the encouragement that you give to the young journalists in the world. An encouragement, which will push these journalists, future of tomorrow, to invest more, in particular as regards the rights of the person and to fight against discrimination and poverty. I am happy and congratulations for the others.

Argentina (Marina Maddaleni, on winning International Journalism and Media Awards 2010): I greatly appreciate this mention and recognition of the value of my program, I do it with love and as you observe, with the intention of creating awareness about our attitudes and everyday reasoning that finally forever are reflected in our lives.

Australia (Gregory Hall, 2003): UCIP marked my journey of discovery of the map of the human family. It was a truly life-changing experience. It challenged and scared me, it affirmed me, made me think long and hard about what existence was all about. I made friendships that have weathered the passage of time and distance.

Brazil (Graziela Cruz, 2007): I have just received the good news of the award!!!! I am so, so, so happy! Thank you very much!!!!! It is, really, very important to have our work recognized by such an important organization as UCIP. This gives us strength and courage to go ahead and continuous trying to do a good work, based on the values we deeply believe in! . . . .

Brazil (Ismar Soares, 2010): The news that Viraçao Magazine has won this year’s International Award for Educommunication is very important and will help the magazine become stronger and to boost its proposal to bring voice to young people.

Cameroon (Antoine Chonang, 2005): I kept tuning to the radio, and just like all of you, I was utterly shocked by the kidnapping of our beloved Father Mgr Casmoussa. I immediately put him in prayers, and started spreading the news around, especially to a few colleagues that I am trying to gather in a team of Movement of Cameroonian Journalists Believers to be affiliated to UCIP. As you know, Mgr Casmoussa is very famous over here, especially with the pictures he took in the traditional attire of "The African King" (you remember he gave that nickname to your humble servant)... I will be publishing the interview obtained from him at Bangkok in the next issue of the "Effort camerounais". . . . . it (the kidnapping) wakened up all of us to form a chain of solidarity around him we knew and loved in Thailand. It is just wonderful! Long live, the UCIP spirit! Let's keep in touch!

Cuba (Pablo Ramos Rivero, 2007) With a lot happiness, I have received your message communicating that I have won the International Award for EduCommunication. This Award is, also, recognition of the work many organizations in Latin America realize on Educomunicación. To them there goes the testimony of my gratitude.

Germany (Brigitte Schmitt, 2007): I am really grateful that I ever got in contact with UCIP. I really appreciate what you do - bringing people and cultures together.

Germany (Daniela Frank, 2005): For me, Bangkok (World Congress held at Bangkok in October 2004) was an excellent communications forum - bringing together a great variety of people, from several parts of the world, working in Church and secular media, for TV, radio and press - and all of them with a great interest to learn from the others, reflect together. And definitely, many of the participants really made the best of such an opportunity to meet (and interview) people from all around the world.

Germany (Dieter Klink, 2008): My dear UCIP friends, My deepest Christmas greetings from Germany. In these difficult days of conflict in the Middle East, please be sure that and let us know that the Spirit of our UCIP University in the year 2000 is still living on as a hope to create future in one human family. I greet you all and I wish you all the best for the year 2009. I still remember our fabulous living time together in the Caribbean! All the best for you all!

Germany (Reinhard Neudecker on winning International Award for Inter-religious Dialogue 2010): It came as a great surprise to me when I received the news of having been chosen, together with two colleagues, to win your Award for Inter-religious Dialogue. Your interest in this dialogue gives rise to hope that it may attract greater attention in world society. For me this honor is a much-appreciated stimulus to continue my work.

Germany (Wolfgang Rollik, 2005): I received the UCIP Information September 2005. I must say: the new look makes it very "precious". It got now a more representative character. And the colour photos - very nice. I like it.

India (Anjali Tirkey, 2007): Thank you for the International Award on Excellence in Journalism 2007! It is indeed a great boost for those who do serious journalism.

India (C.V. Jose, 2009): Thank you all at UCIP office. I know very well the Sri Lanka seminar is very useful like all other programmes UCIP arranges or holds. I am sad and sorry to miss it. Prayerful regards.

India (George Thomas, 2010): From the UCIP website I am very happy to learn that I got selected for this year’ International Award for Women Issues. I am deeply moved and indeed privileged and looking forward to meet you all at this year's congress.

India (George Veliparambil, 2009): I am very happy to receive your mail with information on international refresher seminars at Porto Alegre, Mexico City, Colombo, Rome, Addis Ababa and the summer university exposure in Venezuela............ I have such nostalgic feelings about these great events, which I have participated and organised abundantly. I am happy to continue to get mails so that I can follow in spirit and continue to support you with my prayers.

India (Michael Gonsalves, 2001): It (The 2001 world congress in Fribourg after a few days of September 11 attacks) was an unusual gathering of media professionals, rubbing shoulders with professors of journalism, communications, editors, publishers, printers, producers, broadcasters, reporters, copy editors, television and radio, Internet professionals et al. It opened and broadened my horizon into a mind set to 'think locally but act globally' as it were.

Indonesia (Paul C. Pati, 2006): I am dreaming a day when a refresher program will be organised in Indonesia where press has more and more freedom.

Italy (Ignacio Ingrao, 2002): I was very excited! It was the first time that I have to go abroad for my press agency. In Brazil (at the UCIP the congress), I didn't write just some articles for the agency, but I knew a lot of new friends too. I discovered that, all over the world, there are a lot of colleagues who have to face problems like me. And I began to know better the different problems, obstacles and difficulties of was undoubtedly one of the most interesting UCIP event in which I took part.

Kenya (Pius Sawa Murefu, on winning International Journalism and Media Awards 2010): Am indeed happy to see that I can report on such issues. It pays to feel that my work is appreciated.

Lithuania (Ruta Tumenaite, 2002): My first knowledge of UCIP reached me through the story of my Lithuanian friend and colleague about her experience at the Summer University in Hong Kong. It left me with an impression of UCIP as the warm place of ever benevolent people, who happen to cherish the values as me. That encouraged me to apply for the Refresher Programme in Prague in 1998. Needless to say, I have stuck with them ever since. . . It was so good to refresh the memories from the UCIP jubilee (in December 2002), this memory is like a sweet smelling scarf that I sometimes wrap myself in mentally.

Malawi (Muyanga Innocent Ziba, 2005): I am really impressed with what you do. God bless you for all you have done! Thank you all. A hard working, committed and intelligent team.

New Zealand (Yasmine Ryan, 2010): I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the International Award for Excellence in Journalism 2010. I am truly honoured that you have selected me as one of this year's Laureates. I would love to attend the prize-giving ceremony in September. Thank you to the International Catholic Union of the Press for your time and effort to organise these prizes in recognition of journalists around the world.

Nigeria (Kuha Inder, 2005) We are doing international communications and our lecturer has asked us to present a paper on the media of a country of our choice. I decided to chose Ghana, Victoria Lugey's work in the UCIP information is the main material for me as well as the brochures we had at the Refresher Programme at Accra in June 2005. I am glad that there is UCIP. The Brazil seminar (October 2005) opened my eyes and broadened my understanding of some international issues militating against development, such as racial inequality. As one engaged in development journalism, the seminar provided me with a lot of dimensions on how one can contribute his or her part to development. I lack words to express my appreciation and I just have to use the ageless expression 'Thank You,' to all of you.

Nigeria (Pius Odiaka, 2008): Oh my beloved mentor, thank you thousands for your dogged interest and efforts in seeing that international journalism flourishes in spite of all odds. I am now editing a weekly magazine, “Courtly Magazive”. The international award to me in Canada in June 2007 came at a time the practice of true journalism in Nigeria was threatened. The tide has not changed, but with international professional organisations like IIJC and UCIP, the divine anchor lives on. The light of true journalism will never dim as we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you for the wonderful job, which you are doing for humanity.

Oman (Ben Nnamdi Emenyenou, 2002): One rainy day in June 1990, I arrived at my office and found on my desk an application form for membership of UCIP. Up until this day, I still do not know who did me that million-dollar favour. I find that UCIP has tenaciously created a platform for members to employ their talents and positions to promote the common heritage of the human race regardless of class, creed or colour by breaking down the walls of prejudice and ignorance.

Peru (Milagros (Mily) Rocío Neyra Rodríguez, 2005): I am so glad to be here, in the summer University 2005!! It is wonderful to be here sharing these experiences with all my new friends and journalists from all over the world. I just want to say you thanks, thanks, thanks and more thanks with all my soul! Then I will write to you with details, my best wishes for you!!

Peru (Ramiro Escobar, on winning International Journalism and Media Awards 2010): Many, many thanks. I only made my work with a lot of passion and, I believe, with ethics. Congratulations to UCIP for organizing this award.

Philippines (Jose Aranas, on winning International Journalism and Media Awards 2010): I am really so happy upon receiving the news of this Award. Even my family and friends in the Philippines and in my Movement are really jubilant about this honor that you have given me.

Philippines (Maria Consuelo Gomez, 2005): I am editor of InDepth Magazine and senior correspondent, Philippine Daily Inquirer (www.inq7.net). May I ask permission to have two or three paragraphs of (UCIP) editorial reprinted on my desknote/editor's note for the June (2005) issue of the InDepth magazine? Also I need to be constantly in touch with fellow UCIPers because there is a need to; whatever.... But more than e-mails could do, it's the heartwarming gesture of knowing a colleague flashes across his/her
warmest greetings through use of Internet.

Philippines (Tess Espina, 2005): I am very grateful for giving me the chance to join the UCIP world congress in Bangkok, Thailand. The experience was so enriching. I feel nostalgia of my experiences there. I was thrilled to see people who share with us the same charism. Would you believe that I dreamed of joining the convention of young journalists when I was a college student in 1974. I got interested about UCIP when it was featured in local newspaper. But being held in Europe, I found it an impossible dream and I had forgotten all about it. These days, I recall vividly my desire when I was a student 34 years. I can't believe it! This is a great surprise in my life!

Russia (Maria Anikina 2007): I am very happy to be awarded the International Award for Excellence in Journalism! It is the great honour for me to be among the laureates of this award. I do hope that I could use the brilliant opportunity that you gave me to participate in the congress in Sherbrooke.

Singapore (Christopher Khoo, 2002): I was very happy to meet The UCIP World Congress 2001 in Fribourg journalists from all over the world and discuss the challenges facing the journalists in our countries. I was particularly impressed with the huge turnout from the non-European nations especially from China. After this experience, I told myself I should do my bit to foster networking.

Slovakia (Maria Raucinova, 2002): I studied during the Communist regime in Slovakia and never thought about being a journalist. Truth was masked by Communist slogans at that time and there were no chances to write what you really thought. When situation changed by the collapse of Communist political system and freedom came finally, I started to recognise my mission in a new society. UCIP opened my suburban horizons and I am very grateful to UCIP!

Spain (Jesús Martínez, on winning International Journalism and Media Awards 2010): Thank you very much for the honorable mention, is a real recognition of the work we have done for years.

Sudan (Jervasio Okot, 2003): My sincere thanks and appreciation to the secretariat for having sent the certificate I requested for the Summer University 2002! People respect this certificate and I have been offered several job opportunities for this kind of exposure. UCIP must continue upgrading journalists through this programme and a special focus must be from the countries in need.

Trinidad and Tobago (June Johnston, 2002): UCIP University 1994 in Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South Africa was a life-changing event which made alive the importance of international trusted contacts in our role as journalists seeking to share truth.

Uganda (Evelyn Matsamura Kiapi, on winning International Award for Women Issues 2007): I am overwhelmed and humbled by your decision. It is an encouragement and a sign that my efforts are not being put to waste and being recognised internationally. Thank you very much.

Uganda (Robert Mugagga, 2007): I was really delighted to learn that the Jury Members of the International Journalism Awards 2007 have attributed to me a honourable mention of the international award for solidarity with refugees.

USA (John Macgregor, 2005): I'm not a Catholic, but I have written stories for the International Herald Tribune which would seem to fit the criteria for some UCIP International Media Awards.

USA (Marie Elena Giossi, 2006): I have just visited your website for the first time today and I am quite impressed. I am interested in joining the International Network of Young Journalists so that I may meet other young journalists, grow professionally and better serve those who read my stories.

USA (Owen McGovern, 2002): When I met new journalist friends from all over the world at the Congress, and listened to their stories, my tunnel vision became a global vision. Since that time, I have come to know the true value of UCIP is in the opportunity to network with fellow journalists and exchange information and ideas. UCIP has been a tremendous learning experience for me that has helped me in my position as executive director, as well as in my personal life as a Catholic.

USA (Steve Steele, 2004): My attendance at the last UCIP World Congress 2001 in Switzerland was successful and helped recruit several quality stringers from under-reported areas. Tom and I did a workshop that I'd like for us to repeat at the world Congress at Bangkok. My position on the international desk and as someone who has corresponded for CNS from overseas leaves me qualified to communicate our needs as well as understand where they're coming from. Also, my 2001 trip to Pakistan was engineered as a result of my attendance at the congress held in Switzerland. There's always the possibility of another opportunity like that presenting itself. I also was hoping to do a side trip off of the congress. I've written from East Timor twice for our news agency and I feel a trip there now would be timely and quite easy to pull off. But I also was considering a trip to nearby Laos or Myanmar where we've had virtually no reporting from.

USA (Tom Lorsung, 2005): Congratulations on the big turnout in Brazil (Refresher Programme in October 2005). It's pretty amazing, and one of the reasons I have been impressed with our organisation over the years is its capacity to gather so many people from different backgrounds for a meeting like that. Keep up the good work and we can come up with new approaches to attract more people and resources.

Vatican (Archbishop John P. Foley, 2002): In my own period of association with UCIP, I think that the establishment of the International Network of Young journalists has been a wonderful development.

Zimbabwe (Joyce L. Kazembe, 2005):It was pleasure to be at the Accra Refresher Programme (June 2005). I am quite satisfied by the whole organization and the content.

Zimbabwe (Petronilla Samuriwo, 2002): The most powerful element about UCIP is the organisation's unique ability to traditionally host interaction among different people of the world. For many members of UCIP this has been a divine opportunity which has presented a challenge to address personal prejudice and attitudes towards other races and ethnic groups.
